The SAMBAZON creative team recently spent the day hanging with surfing legend Rob Machado by his local break at Seaside Beach. You might recognize Rob as the soulful pro-surfer from Cardiff, CA, but he is also a grade-A musician, leads a foundation empowering and educating younger generations to make sustainable choices, and is a true Açaí enthusiast.
Rob rolled up in his rustic van around 9 am after dropping his son off at school. So rustic, in fact, that a security patrol car pulled over to inspect it and make sure someone hadn't abandoned the van in the parking lot. The next few hours were spent skateboarding around the parking lot, listening to Rob strum some tunes on his guitar, and enjoying Ready to Eat Bowls while checking out the surf.
There was talk of the Cardiff Kook (google it - trust us), Rob's upcoming surf film called The Color of Winter, and his extensive "might-need-a-mortgage-to-afford-all-of-the-toppings" order at the nearby SAMBAZON Açaí Bowl Shop. Several groms asking for photos stopped by, and more than a few locals cruised over as they got out of the surf for a chat. Rob seems to know most of the Cardiff community on a first name basis, and was more than happy to oblige anyone looking to soak up a minute with him.
One thing that is immediately apparent about Rob is the ease in his presence. His laidback essence is pervasive and imparts the feeling that there is something to be learned from the way that he approaches his day to day. We asked Rob to give us his best five tips for growing young, and he didn't disappoint in his sage advice:
TIP 1: STAYING ACTIVE
"Number 1. I wake up, go for a walk. I think staying active, going for a walk, do a little bit of yoga, a stretch, and that kind of gets my day cooking."
TIP 2: EMBRACE YOUR INNER CHILD
"Then it's chase my grom around, get him to school, or sometimes homeschool. He keeps me pretty entertained and alive."
TIP 3: EAT GOOD, FEEL GOOD
"What we put in our bodies is pretty dang important. I'm always very conscious of what I'm eating, Açaí being one of them. It's important, part of my daily."
TIP 4: A GOOD NIGHT'S REST
"Sleep is really good, it's important. Power naps in the van, always come in handy."
TIP 5: GET IN THE WATER
"I go back to being active, but I think one of the key active ingredients is being in the ocean. I've learned it doesn't have to be surfing. It's just going in the water is so refreshing and reviving and so cleansing. There's so many things about it. I think that's pretty important on my active list. I do all of these other things, but I feel the best when I can do all of these things and get in the water."
Mad thanks to Rob for his sincere love of SAMBAZON. What was your favorite of his tips on growing young? Tell us in the comments below.
